Subtotal is looking for a Founding Design Engineer—someone who lives at the intersection of design and engineering. You’ll be embedded in our creative team, not just to implement designs, but to help shape and realize them. You’ll work alongside product designers to bring high-quality, performant, and brand-consistent experiences to life across every user touchpoint.

This is a unique opportunity to set a high bar for design engineering at Subtotal from day one. You’ll build and ship production-grade software, influence the product roadmap, and play a foundational role in defining how brands and consumers interact in a retail-connected world.

• Shape Subtotal’s creative and technical vision as an early member of the team

• Design and implement performant, elegant, and usable interfaces

• Build full-stack features with a frontend focus (Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind, React)

• Collaborate closely with designers, marketers, and product managers to maintain design quality across all customer experiences

• Own frontend infrastructure and UI systems

• Talk to users, track key metrics, and iterate quickly

   

• A passion for design and pixel-perfect implementation

• Strong full-stack engineering skills with frontend depth

• Experience building polished, high-performance user experiences

• Deep familiarity with modern web technologies (Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind)

• A scrappy, startup-ready mindset, comfortable with ambiguity and moving fast

• A high bar for quality and a track record of meaningful contributions
